3.6.1 Creating model Elements

You begin by creating the required elements for the model. This is done by clicking on the appropriate icons in the toolbar.

Market Segments represent the customers who may use the Services within the model.

  1. Click once on the Market Segment button on the toolbar. The cursor changes to the Market Segment icon.
  2. Click again in the view window where you want to draw the element.
  3. A Market Segment element icon will appear, labelled Market Segment 1.

Note: This default behaviour of STEM can be changed by unchecking Automatic Names from the Options menu. With the option unchecked, the Create Element dialog is displayed when you create a new element. You can then type in the name of your choice.

Services represent the services offered by operators to their customers.

  1. Click on the Service button on the toolbar. The cursor changes to the Service icon.
  2. Click again in the view window where you want to draw the element.
  3. A Service element icon appears in the view window, labelled Service 1.

Note: Because the Market Segment was previously active, the Service is automatically linked to the Market Segment by a dark cyan line, indicating that it is associated with that Market Segment.

Functions provide a means of allocating incremental demand between the Resources in the model and grouping them for costing and tariffing purposes.

  1. Click on the Function button on the toolbar. The cursor changes to the Function icon.
  2. Click again in the view window where you want to draw the element.
  3. A Function element appears in the view window, labelled Function 1.

Resources represent the equipment in the telecommunications network or any other types of resource that are required to implement the Service.

  1. Click on the Resource button on the toolbar. The cursor changes to the Resource icon.
  2. Click again in the view window where you want to draw the element.
  3. A Resource element appears in the view window, labelled Resource 1.

Note: When you create the Resource it is linked to the Function by a red line, indicating that it belongs to that Function.
